Jay Petrek for
San Marcos Unified School District Board
POST-ELECTION UPDATE
WE DID IT! Precinct votes have been counted and residents have chosen who they want as their representatives on the San Marcos School Board. As the candidate who received the most votes I am elated by the outcome. I am honored and humbled to represent our school district and pledge my commitment to serve our students and community to the best of my ability. I would like to thank all those who endorsed my efforts, donated to my campaign, invited me into their homes, walked precincts delivering literature, stood on street corners waving signs...this was a collective effort and very much appreciated.
Retiring Governing Boardmembers Mary Borevitz and Pam Bancells will be recognized at a short reception preceding the next school board meeting. The reception will be held in the front lobby area of the North County Regional Education Center at 5:30 p.m. on November 17, 2008. Newly elected school board members Randy Walton and I, along with incumbent David Horacek, will be sworn into office at 6:30 p.m on December 8, 2008, and a new President, Vice President and Clerk will be elected.
Thank you for your support during the campaign. I look forward to working with my fellow Governing Boardmembers on the issues facing our schools and appreciate input from all residents as decisions are made regarding the future of our district.
Sincerely,
Jay Petrek
WELCOME!
I am excited to announce my candidacy for the San Marcos Unified School District Board, and I thank you for visiting my web site. I am running for election because I care about our youth and believe we all have a vested interest in what happens to our schools. I believe educating children is one of our most important responsibilities and, in our rapidly changing world, ensuring a quality education for our youth is one of our biggest challenges. I am honored to be one of two candidates in this election endorsed by the San Marcos Educators' Association; who comprise the teachers of our district. I have respectfully declined financial contributions from the Teacher's Union; my campaign is supported by the generosity of individuals who share my vision for the district.
Since moving to San Marcos fourteen years ago, I've had the privilege and honor of serving the community on a variety of committees and programs targeted at improving the educational environment of students in our district. I have learned from my experience as a husband, parent, community volunteer, and former school board member the importance of dedication, fairness, teamwork, trust, and accountability. I recognize and value the partnerships of parents, teachers, students, and community in educating children.
I believe parent involvement is crucial for student achievement and successful schools. As Co-President of San Marcos High School's Parent Club I collaborate with Parent Club Presidents from all schools in our district and am impressed with the caliber of dedicated parents, volunteers, and community members. Excellent teachers and support staff are key to establishing a learning environment that is safe and conducive to high educational standards. San Marcos Unified School District is recognized as a leader in providing a quality education in a safe environment. Strong partnerships with local governments within our district and the business community are mutually beneficial and create trust, accountability, and continued support.
Public education is a cornerstone of American democracy. As a community that values education we recognize that successful schools are key to ensuring our community is a desirable place to live. In our increasingly competitive world we have a responsibility to provide our students an academic environment that will afford them success in their future endeavors, whether it be a college/university education or vocational career. Our schools' ability to educate children hinges on decisions and financial support at the state and federal levels of government, placing enormous pressures on our budget. I am committed to advocating for strong public schools and will focus on key areas that will enhance our students' academic environment.
In my opinion, an effective School Board member represents the community at large in a fair and respectful manner. I know that a member must work hard to be well informed about all issues affecting our educational system. While there are a variety of viewpoints that may exist, the focus should always be on what is best for students. Upon election I pledge to continue my commitment to serve the students, families and residents of the San Marcos Unified School District.
