About Jay

 Jay's involvement with our local schools and the community has given him insight on a wide range of issues facing our educational system.  Jay was awarded the San Diego County School Boards Association's 2005 Parent Volunteer of the Year. His current and past involvement includes:

  • Serving as the 2010 Vice-President of the San Marcos Unified School District Governing Board, and previously in 2004.
  • Elected as President of the San Marcos High School Parent Club and actively involved in Parent Club fundraising events that raised more than $125,000 over the past three years to benefit high school students.
  •  Volunteering on San Marcos High School Senior Class Safe-and-Sober Gradnite for eight years (2003-2010) as a committee member and overnight chaperon.
  • Served on the San Marcos Unified School District Facilities Steering Committee.
  • Serving on the San Marcos High School Redesign Committee.

 

  • Served on the San Marcos Unified School District Visioning Committee.
  • Appointed to the City of San Marcos Ridgeline Ordinance Taskforce by the San Marcos City Council.
  • Elected President of the Discovery Elementary School Parent Club
  • Served on the San Marcos Unified School District Budget Committee.
  • Volunteered as a coach for San Marcos Youth Baseball. 
  • Volunteered as a Cub Scout Assistant Den Leader.
  • Served on the committee to address San Marcos High School overcrowding.
  • Served on the San Marcos Unified School District Middle and High School Attendance Area Committees.
  • Volunteered for San Marcos Middle School and San Elijo Middle School Band Boosters.
  • Served as Classroom Volunteer for La Costa Elementary and Discovery Elementary Schools.

Jay graduated from Poway High School in 1977.  After graduation he enrolled at UCSD and ultimately transferred to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Urban and Regional Planning in 1983.  Jay is now  employed as a Principal Planner by the City of Escondido and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners
Jay and his wife, Heather, have been active San Marcos residents since moving to the community in 1994.  Heather has served as President of the San Marcos Middle School and San Elijo Middle School Band Boosters, graduated from National University, and is Editor of The Escondido Magazine.
 
Their three children, Aaron, Zachary, and Brooke have attended San Marcos District Schools since kindergarten.  Aaron graduated from San Marcos High School in 2008, has a private pilot's license, and is enrolled in the Professional Aeronautics Program at Miramar College.  Zachary graduated from SMHS in 2010 and currently attends Palomar College.  Brooke is currently a Junior at San Marcos High School.
